Kingsdown Lodge is a specialised service for males with a mild learning disability which may require intensive support to maintain their integration within the local community.  Kingsdown Lodge is in a beautiful location on the sea front with excellent facilities and personalised accommodation in the heart of the community.

Introduction

Our aim is to provide quality support that is based on respect for peoples’ individuality and right to make their own choices.  Our philosophy is to enable people to live as independent a life as possible.  We are committed to enable individuals to participate in all aspects of a ‘supported living’ framework with an intensive 24 hour support package. Our focus is on supporting people through individualised person-centred support plans to achieve their goals and aspirations.  This includes attendance at college and access to various courses, as well as daily living skills or work placements. Our service will continually and consistently promote the development of individuals’ social skills and independent living with intensive 1-1 support which focuses on managing specific risks whilst developing individuals’ skills.

Our staff members are highly trained in positive behaviour support and mental health needs.  Staff members are encouraged to build on existing links with educational and academic centres to ensure the most up-to-date models of support.  We recognise the importance and involvement of all key stakeholders in developing and enhancing our services.  Active involvement from all parties is encouraged. 

Activities

Our location is ideal for individuals to access educational and vocational programmes.  Our extensive programme of activities includes (but is not limited to):

  • Local adult education and colleges
  • Local voluntary work and access to gainful employment
  • Computer-based activities
  • Cooking lunch/food preparation
  • Arts and crafts
  • Resource and activity centres to promote independent living skills
  • Local amenities and facilities such as leisure, shops, restaurants and places of interest
  • Our own holiday homes within a leisure complex

Our commitment is to provide the best support to meet individuals’ needs by ensuring our staff members are highly trained in positive behaviour support and mental health needs.  Staff members are encouraged to build on existing links with educational and academic centres to ensure the most up-to-date models of support.

What people told us during the inspection:

”...people said they liked to be independent and liked the support they were receiving at the home while they needed it. One person said, "Yes, it's alright here, I can do what I want to do." Another person laughed and said, "Yes, yes, good" and said he was doing lots of different things.

Some of the people had recently booked a holiday and said they were looking forward to it."
